“Seeing Ourselves Through Technology Ch. 1” Notes

Summary:

  •  The beginning of the chapter started out by talking about an Italian “Mannerist Painter” named Parmigianino and how his self portrait using a convex mirror is so much related to today’s way of us shaping ourselves through technology. People use SNS (social networking system) to view themselves and compare to others. This is just like how Parmigianino did a self portrait and saw himself (just without going through the painting process).  During the seventeenth century, not many people know how to read or write. Maybe doctors were the only people who could possibly read and write. The vast majority cannot read or write. It was a thing until the nineteenth century when people started reading and writing and the knowledge started expanding. So much to the point where most of the people who read and write were either priests or nuns. They wrote religious things, but writing was more than just writing religious things. It was for business reasons like keeping track of businesses or funds. For personal reasons it’d be something private like a diary. Photography was another that has been growing at a rapid speed as well. Over the years photography is becoming a central society norm for majority of people. During Parmigianino’s era were paintings and self portraits, but in this century is mostly about photography. Quantitative Self-Representation is basically when you keep track of what you do basically during your free time. This is also a way to record dates and events.

Commentary:

  • From what I’ve seen, this chapter is pretty accurate of today’s society. Social Media is just like self portrait with a little bit of writing to express through the internet. The author did talk about how he or she did do researches on selfie. That seems strange since people do not think much about selfies enough to do a research on it. He or she (the author) said when we post a selfie, it is not just about us, but is about what we’re doing. That is very true because whenever someone takes a selfie, the tend to have a reason for it to be posted like whether it is a good outfit, a dope car, or somewhere nice people tend to take a selfie. When people share their selfie, they’re not just showing off to the world, but also to themselves in a way. This is the kind of thing that increases self-esteem.

Making Connections:

  • I personally cannot relate to the whole selfie thing because I do not take any pictures of myself. If I do take a picture of an event or something, I make the event or whatever the picture is about goes straight forward for the audience to understand. In today’s society I feel like shows off a bit, so this topic is easy to write about. Teenagers and young adults are the best example, they like to wear expensive clothes a lot these days, something like “supreme” or “off white” (both very good brand, both very expensive brands) t-shirt could go for hundreds even thousands of dollars, they’d wear it and take a picture and put it up on their social media. The picture they took is targeted to specifically that tee “supreme” or “off white” t-shirt as a way of showing off their nice shirt. It would lead to the audience thinking that you’re rich (reality is it might not be true) Bringing back the whole selfie thing, I feel that you’re not being true to yourself if society only sees you as a positive person who is always happy and having fun, but there is no reality in it. I also feel that people tend to post on their social media when they feel happy and positive. When they are not in the brightest mindset, they try to avoid, due to society norms looking down on negative people. Negative maybe not even knowing their background led them or certain event happened and they cannot express to the public. People only wants to see others positive and not negative because it’d bring the surroundings mood down too.

“Why Blog” Reflection

I thought that the points that were made in the article was interesting because I never knew for some people setting up a blog is hard for them. I’m surprised some people could generate some ideas for their own blog. Our class talked about how some of them do not like the idea of their blog of their personal life being out in public. For me it isn’t much of a problem because recalling back my introduction, I said I don’t have much to talk about in my life, but I try to make the most of it on the blog. During class I said in my little discussion that the blogs are risky, but at the same time it is not. The risky side is people could perceive you differently and judge you for who you are. For not so risky side, you just might find someone with the same interest as you and you and that other can deepen your conversation and build more ideas for your blog. Blogging could also be a good way to relieve your stress because if you have a frustration, you can write about it and someone somewhere over the internet could reply and help you. Kind of almost like therapy, but not at the same time. Those were my thoughts on why we should blog, some may differ, but those were my opinion.

“Why Blog?” Notes

Summary:

  • The beginning of this little article talk about how most students specifically college students were mot motivated to write. They were having little to no interest in writing. Most teens preferred to be on their device, so blogging keeps them motivated more than actually writing on paper. This way this keeps the teens more engaged and interested. People have different views on blogging. Some may find it easy to blog while others find it more complex. It all differ and people do not really truly know what blogging is about. When blogging first came to be a thing on the internet, not a lot of people blogged. Only the minimal few blogged, but they talked about problems like politics, news, current events, etc. Rarely about interest or personal life like it is today. Today people blog about a wide range of topics like funny cat videos to something like a good song they recommend others listening to. It’s almost like a form of social media recording your life for memories or for others who are interested in. Blogging left you thinking what you want your blog to be about and how others are going to perceive it. You constantly want to generate ideas to put out to everyone to see to keep yourself motivated while keeping the readers interested. Not everyone is perfect, so people do reflect and critic on your blogs in order to improve your posts in the future. That is the perfect was way to also generate ideas and connect with others through your interest.

Main Idea and Key Term:

  • Blogging is not something that everyone can do, in fact it is something hard to do for some people because they don’t know much about how to blog.
  • Setting up a blog is complicated for some people who doesn’t know the proper way to set up.
  • Blogsphere: relates to all the opinions, articles, etc. that are published by people on blogs or media.
  • Brainstorming: coming up with ideas or way to solve or create something.
  • RSS (Real Simple Syndication): uses a family of standard web feed formats to publish frequently updated information.

Commentary:

  • Alex went on further into more detail about the whole layout of the blog. As he explained it he talked about good decisions to what your blogs are would look like. You can change things like templates and background to keep your blog modern and updated. That way if you don’t like your layout you can change it. Alex Reid did a pretty good job explain the importance of the layout that I never really thought about. For me, I thought creating a layout the way that fits your taste is the best way to get yourself comfortable with your blog. Changing things around doesn’t seem too hard because you can always change things back. Alex also mentioned something about hot to define a blog can be difficult when thinking about what to write, I notice when I’m not thinking too hard while typing, I can make blogging more easy. As long as the topic relates to you and your interest, ideas can generate really quickly. Know who your target audiences are, kind of like business, you set up a business, generate what products you want, why are you create this product, and who your target consumers are. So like blogging, set up your blog, generate what kind of blog you’re writing about, why are you making a blog about this topic, and who is your reader, your target audience. Although you may have target audiences, not everyone will agree with you. Some will argue against your topics, but do not be afraid to have that as a way to alternate or idea generator.

Me

So this is where I write about most of my life for about the next few weeks. Since not many people know much about my life so I will write an introduction about me. Obviously the title should give it away because it is a very basic and very creative title. My life isn’t the most interesting to read about because there isn’t much to it. It is mostly revolved around something related to music because it has been like that for me for the past 16 years growing up listening to music almost everyday of my life. Now I play instruments, it is kind of mandatory that I listen to music and frankly I enjoy it a lot. It has became my hobby and I can’t see myself a day without music, so that’s pretty dope. I would like to be a music producer in the future and hopefully drop maybe a digital single within the next few month to a year or 2. I would hope to make my first move by signing a contract with a music record label where they can support my dream of dropping my first album within 5 years from now. So that’s something I hope to see in the next 10 years of my life. Some of my favorite genre of music are; pop, rock, hip hop, R&B, electronic, and mainly Korean pop. Some of my favorite artists are; Martin Garrix, BLACKPINK (like what was said in my bio duh), WANNA ONE, DΞΔN, Jay Park, Alan Walker, Famous Dex, Eminem, KARD, BTS, etc. I have more to talk about, but I am not in the mood to continue typing so you will find more information about me soon. Thank you for reading a little bit about me, please continue to read more about me (I tend to crack jokes from time to time even though they’re not so good so hopefully you find my posts somewhat entertaining).

Set Up

I know I know, I have the best title ever, anyways the set up for me was a bit, “meh”, it wasn’t too hard, but it wasn’t easy because I don’t blog. Then again neither do most of the class, I think the problem for me was the instructions were a bit hard to follow. I had the teacher explain it to me on how to do the blogroll. Afterwards it was easy throughout the process. The web-page itself was easy to create. I did not feel frustrated at all because I knew I just needed to wait and ask the teacher for help, although I should add someone from my class to help me out in the future. Posting things like these I feel like is easier for people to express themselves compared to writing a paper because you have more ideas on screen than off screen.
